Definition-Past Indefinite Tense represents an action occurred in the past or a habit of the past.
परिभाषा-Past Indefinite Tense ,Past में घटित /भूतकाल में घटित घटनाओं को दर्शाता है ।
Past Simple का प्रयोग ऐसे वाक्यों में किया जाता है ,जिनमे भूतकाल में कार्य का पूर्ण होना अथवा संपन्न होना बताया गया हो ।
Past Indefinite Tense की पहचान –
- इस Tense में कार्य का होना भूतकाल में पाया जाता है ।
- इस प्रकार के वाक्यों में अंत में ‘आ’ , ‘ या ‘ , ‘ ई ‘ , ‘ ये ‘ ता था ‘ , ‘ ती थी ‘ , ‘ ते थे ‘ आदि शब्द आते हैं।
जैसे कि –
सीता ने राम को एक पत्र लिखा ।
कल वर्षा हुई थी ।
मैंने उसकी सहायता की ।

Past Indefinite Tense के अनुवाद करने के Sentence Structure / Sentence Rules निम्न हैं –

Affirmative Sentence
Simple Past Tense के Affirmative Sentence में अनुवाद करने के निम्न नियम हैं –
- एक वचन कर्ता और बहुवचन कर्ता के साथ केवल Affirmative Sentences में सदैव Verb के २nd form प्रयुक्त करते हैं ।
- Sentence Structure- Subject + Verb की 2nd फॉर्म + Object .
Examples of Affirmative Sentence
| सीता ने राम को एक पत्र लिखा । | Sita wrote a letter to Ram. |
| मैंने कल उसे एक किताब दी । | I gave him a book. |
| हमने अपना पाठ याद कर लिया । | We learnt our lesson. |
| वह विद्यालय जाया करती थी । | She used to go for a walk daily. |
| वे फुटबाल खेले । | They played football. |
| रविशंकर ने एक T.V ख़रीदा । | Ravishankar purchased a T.V. |
| साक्षी ने कल अपने कपडे धोये । | Sakshi washed her clothes. |
| रहीम ने 100 रुपये दान दिए । | Rahim donated one hundred rupees. |
| मैंने उसकी सहायता की । | I helped him. |
Negative Sentence
Simple Past Tense के Negative Sentence में अनुवाद करने के निम्न नियम हैं –
- एक वचन कर्ता और बहुवचन कर्ता के साथ Negative Sentences में did not के साथ सदैव Verb के 1st form प्रयुक्त करते हैं ।
- Sentence Structure- Subject +did not + Verb की 1st फॉर्म + Object .
Examples of Negative Sentence
| उसने एक पत्र नही लिखा । | He did not write a letter/ |
| वह कल नही गयी । | She did not go yesterday. |
| उन्होने मैच नही खेला । | They did not play the match. |
| राधा ने कोई गलती नही की । | Radha did not make any mistake. |
| तुम्हारा भाई कल यहाँ नहीं आया । | Your brother did not come here yesterday. |
| वह विद्यालय नही गया । | He did not go to school. |
| मैंने कल एक पत्र नही लिखा । | I did not write a letter yesterday. |
| पिता जी आम नही खाए । | Father did not eat mangoes. |
| उसने अपनी पुस्तक नही पढ़ी । | He did not read his book. |
Interrogative Sentence
Simple Past Tense के Interrogative Sentence में अनुवाद करने के निम्न नियम हैं –
- Interrogative वाक्यों में प्रत्येक कर्ता के पहले सहायक क्रिया did लगाकर कर्ता के बाद Verb की first form का प्रयोग करते हैं ।
- यदि प्रश्नवाचक शब्द जैसे -क्या ,क्यों ,कब ,कैसे आदि बीच में आये तो ,उसकी अंग्रेजी did से पहले लिखते हैं ।
- Who के साथ Verb की 2nd form का प्रयोग करते हैं और सहायक क्रिया did का प्रयोग नही करते । वाक्य -9 और 10.

| तुम कहाँ रहते थे ? | Where did you live ? |
| क्या तुम्हारे पिताजी तुम्हे प्यार करते थे ? | Did your father love you? |
| उसने क्या किया ? | What did he do ? |
| उसने दूध कब पिया ? | When did he drink milk ? |
| वह विद्यालय क्यों जाया करती थी ? | Why did she use to go to school ? |
| तुम आज कहाँ गये थे ? | Where did you go today? |
| तुम्हे कल किसने बुलाया था ? | Who called you yesterday ? |
| वहां कौन गया था ? | Who went there ? |
Interrogative Negative Sentences
- Interrogative Negative वाक्यों में प्रत्येक कर्ता के पहले सहायक क्रिया did लगाकर कर्ता के बाद not का प्रयोग करते हैं और Verb की first form का प्रयोग करते हैं ।
- यदि प्रश्नवाचक शब्द जैसे -क्या ,क्यों ,कब ,कैसे आदि बीच में आये तो ,उसकी अंग्रेजी did से पहले लिखते हैं ।
- How much या How many का प्रयोग होने पर इनसे सम्बंधित noun का प्रयोग करने के बाद did का प्रयोग करें और Verb की फर्स्ट फॉर्म का उसे करें ।
Examples of Interrogative Negative Sentence
| वे पानी क्यों नही पीते थे ? | Why did they not drink water/ |
| उसने कल उसकी सहायता क्यों नही की ? | Why did they not help him ? |
| तुम वहां क्यों रुके ? | Why did you stay there? |
| उसने मुझे उत्तर क्यों नही दिया ? | Why did he not reply me ? |
| क्या तुमने लाल किला नही देखा ? | Did you not see the Red Fort ? |
Use of Past Indefinite Tense in various situation
आइये अब जानते हैं की Past Indefinite Tense का प्रयोग कहाँ कहाँ किया जाता है –
- ऐसे कार्य जो भूतकाल में Past Time में पूर्ण हो गये हैं ,जिनमे कार्य पूर्ण होने का एक definite time जैसे -yesterday,last year etc. का पता चलता हो । जैसे –
An accident took place yesterday.
He came last night. - ऐसे
कार्य जिनमे कार्य पूर्ण होने का समय नही दिया गया हो ,जो भूतकाल में पूर्ण हो गये हो । जैसे –
He went market .
I donated five thousand rupees.
She washed her clothes. - भूतकाल की आदत को भी व्यक्त करने के लिए Simple Past का प्रयोग किया जाता है । जैसे –
He always carried this bag.
He never went to church.
He used to go for a walk daily. - जब दो कार्य Sequence में एक के बाद दूसरा तुरंत समाप्त हो जाता है तो Past Indefinite का प्रयोग किया
जाता है । ऐसे वाक्यों में before,conjunction का प्रयोग होता है । जैसे –
He switched on the light before he opened the door.
He changed his dress before he went to bed. - जब दो घटना साथ साथ घटित होती है तब भी Past Indefinite का प्रयोग किया जाता है । जैसे –
When the queen entered the hall ,the orchestra played the National Anthem.
When the P.M. entered the meeting room ,all congratulated him. - Wish एवं If only के साथ Simple Past का प्रयोग
एक unreal past को व्यक्त करता है एवं Present स्थिति को स्पष्ट करता है । जैसे –
I wish I knew her.
I wish I were a millionaire.

एक कौआ था । वह बहुत प्यासा था । उसने पानी की तलाश की किन्तु कहीं पानी नही दिखाई पड़ा । वह बड़ा दुखी था । थोड़ी देर में एक घड़ा देखा जिसमे थोडा पानी था । उसने घड़े में चोंच डाली किन्तु पानी नही पाया । उसकी चोंच पानी तक नही पहुंची । उसने एक युक्ति सोची । उसने कंकड़ के टुकड़े उसमे एक एक करके डाले । पानी ऊपर आ गया । उसने पानी पी लिया और अपनी प्यास बुझा ली ।

My father lived in Delhi.He was a doctor.One day I wrote a letter to him.He did not reply me.Then I went to Delhi to meet him.He saw me there and was very happy.I did not stay there with my father.I returned from there.My friend said to me,”Did you go to Delhi. Who went there with you.Why did you stay there.I went to Delhi but did not see the Red Fort.”.My friend always used to go there.His uncle also lived there.He used to stay there with him.
